Beggs has since become known for using human rights legislation to argue for prisoners rights -- including working on a campaign to win the right to vote for inmates. but one of the foremost exponents of this type of work is learning disabled theatre company Lung Ha's,''Hallelujah!'' cries Lung Ha's general manager Ali Kerr in the organisation's annual report of last year ''For the first time in 16 years the company receives a review which does not mention the cast's disability'' Talking to John Mitchell and Louise Ironside co-writers and directors of Lung Ha's latest production it is difficult not to mention the issue however It does after all inform all of their work But Lung Ha's are not an issue-based company; they are not preaching or campaigning; and the only possible disability found in this play's protagonist is the fact that he is well dead As Mitchell explains: ''The story came about through an article I read in the New Scientist which said theoretically there could be places within the universe where time travels backwards and living things ungrow That was the start of it - which sounds like a nice idea until you begin doing it and then it's very difficult'' No patronising simplicity then in this tale of a man who is knocked down on a highway in a mythic kind of America and finds his life tracking backwards through time meeting various people whose lives he had messed upStylistically it is a strongly visual piece which is very much Mitchell's style of directing - as seen in his previous four shows with Lung Ha's and his work with Oxygen House and The Grassmarket Project The visual aspect is also the one concession to any notion of handicap ''You're not going to give somebody a big soliloquy and you use lines in a certain way'' says Mitchell ''Basically what it means is spending a few days finding out what the particular strengths are and what is the best way to tell the story So there might be somebody who is very confident with lines somebody who is very confident with movement somebody who has a great emotional or physical presence and then piecing it together from that''For Traverse writer-in-residence Ironside it is an amazing discipline ''Every line really has to earn its living'' she adds ''We don't have anything extraneous'' n Are Unheard Memories Sweet is at the Traverse Edinburgh tomorrow and Thursday and then tours Scotland until November 17 The intervention was necessary but fatal: the ball shot off his studs and inside the far post.
